Contact Joy:

  • I am accepting new coaching clients. I am available for one-on-one writing coaching, productivity coaching, leadership in higher education , & professional consulting via the telephone or via Zoom/Teams/FaceTime.

  • I will announce dates & locations for retreats in August 2024, October 2024, & November 2024 soon, as well as into 2025.

  • For other workshops & retreats, I design the workshop/retreat to meet your group’s unique needs. You can schedule a free consult with me & we can chat or you can email me at joyajhoward@gmail.com to start the conversation.

    • Q: Joy, what size workshops & retreats do you facilitate?

      • A: I am comfortable with any group size. Really! Group sizes as diverse as 5 new Deans all onboarding at a HBCU the same time. They asked for a 2-day retreat at a Bed & Breakfast on the topic of “Reflection.” I guided them through many different ways to use writing as a reflection practice so as to serve their students more effectively & to consistently check in on themselves (& each other) to stay in touch with their own sense of emotional wellness.

      • I also love working with big audiences of 200 or 300. I engage with my audience through many mini-projects that they work together to do. For example, when new faculty came together for a 1/2 day on writing this first year, I have guided them through learning how to write succinct, powerful emails to their students that the students will actually read; and likewise, how not to get caught up in department email exchanges such as the exchange that one of my clients faced when a senior faculty member wrote thousands of words about a topic so trivial it would be laughable if he wasn’t so angry that he wanted her fired. He inappropriately cc’ed everyone—including all of the graduate students & postdocs—but because my client did not respond to the email chain, the whole thing fizzled out & thankfully, she did not experience more than one or two very concerning moments of severe disrespect from graduate students who had been cc’ed on the emails .

        • I also have shared with faculty—always with resounding success—how to use writing for an end-of-the-day-quick-closure log (by “quick” I mean less than 10 min) so you have a record of your work for annual reports, grant reporting, it won’t always be like this, I promise! Also, records are good, date those inner critics that pop up & say you haven’t done anything.
